Kenyatta University Green Education Hub, in collaboration with Kenyatta University Environmental Club (KUNEC), hosted a mazingira challenge to mark this month - March 2023 Green Education Day on the 24th. Mazingira is a Swahili word for the environment.

Across the globe, environmental issues are gaining media attention, thus increasing awareness of environmental and sustainability problems and their effects on various ecosystems. It is against this backdrop that Kenyatta University Green Education Hub organised a workshop on the Role of Media in Environmental Awareness on 24th February 2023 as part of the Green Education Day series of events held every last Friday of the month.

Wetlands are ecosystems where land is either permanently or seasonally partially saturated with water. They are regarded as among the most productive and vital ecosystems globally, even comparable to coral reefs and forests. Wetlands are seen as "biological supermarkets" providing vast volumes of food that support a wide variety of flora and fauna.

COP 27 has been referred to as an ‘African conference’. It provides an opportunity for climate activists and organisations across the continent to be actively involved in climate action. Kenyatta University Green Education Hub organised a pre-COP 27 workshop attended by the Hub's climate ambassadors, students from other universities under the Kenya Inter-University Environmental Association (KIUESA) and nongovernmental organisations among them Green Planet Kenya and We Don't Have Time-Kenya Chapter. The workshop's primary objective was to equip the Hub’s ambassadors and the university community with relevant climate change knowledge and existing opportunities for climate action.

In marking the 3rd Green Education Day (GED), the Green Education Hub ambassadors contributed to the awareness on climate change using songs, art and sports. The day began with a climate change awareness walk within the university starting from School of Education Building and terminating at the sports fields. One of the researchers in the Hub, Dr. Wilson Mutuma, flagged off the walk noting that university students and youth involvement in climate action is key in addressing the climate crisis.

The Green Education Hub plays a crucial role in enhancing students’ role in co-creating knowledge and practicing values in climate justice, mitigation and adaptation. The Hub’s Green Education Days provide an opportunity to students in universities in Kenya to showcase their climate actions and raise awareness of climate change.
