Sports is a powerful tool in climate action’

In marking the 3rd Green Education Day (GED), the Green Education Hub ambassadors contributed to the awareness on climate change using songs, art and sports. The day began with a climate change awareness walk within the university starting from School of Education Building and terminating at the sports fields. One of the researchers in the Hub, Dr. Wilson Mutuma, flagged off the walk noting that university students and youth involvement in climate action is key in addressing the climate crisis. This is inline with the hub’s role which involves the youth in co-creation of knowledge and dissemination of climate change information through various forums like sports and art.

The Hub’s ambassadors held an educative and awareness session on various climate issues using paintings. Participants were given an opportunity to interpret climate change “messages” expressed through painting portraits. Jesse David, one of the climate ambassadors, performed a song on climate climate impacts, to musically inform inform the GED participants about climate change crisis at the local and global levels. Themes messages urged participants to take individual and collective responsibility in climate action, and to build interest among the university community to participate in efforts to address climate change.

Sports activities crowned the day. Participants were grouped into teams and participated in sports and team-building activities, including football, egg and sack race and traditional dances. The sports and team building activities main aim was to leverage the power of students to support Kenyatta University’s climate action. As the participants participated in the activities, they were informed on sustainable practices such as minimizing single plastic use, the importance of afforestation and biodiversity conservation, and bridging the climate literacy gap at the university and their communities. The Green Football team, the winners of the football match, were awarded a trophy for emerging the champions.
