Mwiki Secondary School Environmental Club Benchmarking Visit to Kenyatta University Green Education Hub
“Cultivating change, inspiring student-led initiatives”
On Friday, 19th September, the Kenyatta University Green Education Hub hosted students
from the Mwiki Secondary School Environmental Club for a special benchmarking visit. The event provided a significant shared learning experience, reinforcing our collective responsibility and emphasising the Hub’s mission to establish a cohesive network of climate action student ambassadors, empowering learners at all levels to assume the role of architects for a sustainable future. The event was graced by Professor Samson Ondigi, the Executive Dean Kenyatta University School of Education and Lifelong Learning. His involvement highlighted the academic significance of integrating theoretical concepts with practical, student-based environmental initiatives.
In his address to the students, Professor Ondigi 
advised going beyond theoretical considerations, emphasizing the pivotal role students play in addressing the climate crisis. He placed particular emphasis on the assertion that extracurricular student-led clubs should be regarded as being of paramount importance in the development of future leaders and innovators. Prof. Ondigi challenged the students to conceptualize themselves as active agents of change, emphasizing that their talents, when directed through structured activities, can generate tangible solutions for their communities and the nation. This approach establishes a direct connection between academic pursuit and real-world stewardship.
The visit proved instrumental in facilitating a dynamic exchange of ideas. Representatives from the Green Education Hub expounded on their projects, encompassing a spectrum of projects from climate teach, action, and advocacy. The capacity-building support provided by the Hub has been instrumental in enabling the implementation of these initiatives, offering a clear and inspiring pathway for student-led initiatives. Mr. Isaac Mwangi, the Mwiki Secondary School Environmental Club Patron, expounded on the remarkable partnership with the Hub in solidifying the club’s projects from greening their school to establishing a functional tree nursery. He also expressed appreciation for the Hub’s support in planning to install study benches, emphasizing a collaborative effort that generates a long-lasting, multifaceted impact.
