Kenyatta University Green Education Hub at Mwiki Secondary School: From Theory to Practice

“Cultivating Sustainability: Establishing Sustainable Systems”
On 13 June 2025, the Kenyatta University Green Education Hub (KUGEH) Ambassadors 
did a follow-up visit to Mwiki Secondary School (https://teacher.co.ke/mwiki-secondary- school-contacts-and-physical-location/) to assess progress of the trees that had been planted during the inaugural Climate-U Network Conference held at Kenyatta University from 24 to 27 September 2024. Together with the learners, the KUGEH Encouragingly, the trees planted during the Climate-U Conference excursion were thriving, which clearly demonstrates the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Ambassadors established a fruit tree nursery and mentored student members of the Environmental Club.
The new fruit-tree nursery features climate-resilient varieties of avocado, mango and citrus fruits. The nursery will provide an environmental education learning space. Through this initiative, students are gaining practical skills in sustainable agriculture by taking part in activities such as selecting seeds and learning about water conservation techniques. Students are practicing creative reuse of milk cartons as plant pots, providing a tangible example of the circular economy in action. Our mentorship programme aims to transform the Environmental Clubs into a hub for student-driven sustainability initiatives. This will be achieved through interactive sessions on organic school farming, water conservation and waste management.
The peer-to-peer learning session at Mwiki Secondary School ensured an exchange of knowledge, creating 
confident student ambassadors for environmental stewardship and building impact within the school and the wider community. The school’s green spaces have evolved into vibrant outdoor learning areas. However, permanent shade structures are required to maximise their potential. Mwiki Secondary is a testament to how academic partnerships can translate into tangible environmental progress. The success of these initiatives, from the thriving trees to the student-led sustainability projects, demonstrates the multiplier effect of combining education with practical action.
